This lovely wine-route town is one of the three oldest settlements in the
country: the first farms were granted to Dutch settlers in 1687 and to the
French Huguenots, who introduced wine farming to the area, in 1688. Gradually
more people settled along the western banks of the
Berg River. A treasure house of architecture is found along a 2km stretch
of Main Street, starting at 'Strooidakkerk' (thatched roof church). Zeederberg
Square is surrounded by picturesque Cape Dutch, Victorian and Georgian houses.
The Millwater Wildflower Garden, on Paarl Mountain, features three reservoirs
for fishing, camping, a variety of local flora and a picnic area in a picturesque
setting alongside the old Mill stream. Further afield, take a drive over
one of the four spectacular mountain passes linking Paarl
to neighbouring towns: Du Toit's Kloof Pass, Franschhoek Pass, Helshoogte
Pass and Bainskloof Pass.
